Both would be bad, spaces more than $s.
Think how many /bin/sh scripts written by third parties, or perhaps even
provided by NetBSD, which do a "for user in ..." block.
I believe the semantic validation of usernames being confined to
alphanumeric, ., _, and - is quite important restriction.
