While we're on exit codes from pax-as-tar : I didn't get some news from
`bin/18959`

The problem was that if a file is beeing modified while archiving,
gnutar does as much as it can, then exits with 0, while pax-as-tar
miserably fails.

It break *many* backup scripts, since logfiles, for example, exhibits
this problem. And the meaning of life for logfiles is to be modified
constantly :-)
