I'd think any backup done today is being done on live filesystems since 
you simply cannot take the machine down for an hour or two when the 
backup is running (with network backups like e.g. amanda, it can't be 
done in any other way anyways), so your point is a bit weak imho...  Of 
course a filesystem with snapshot capabilities (like most advanced 
filesystems today provide) removes those inconsistencies  [Btw., I'm 
glad that FreeBSD starts including such capabilities with UFS2 in the 
just released 5.0-RELEASE, are there plans for NetBSD to incorporate it, 
or provide likewise features?]
