Seconded.
The way to go is, IMHO:
1) make sure pkgs can be installed easily, either from source or binary;
see http://sf.net/projects/pkgselect for a way to do that
2) make sure binary pkgs are widely available.
3) let people choose what they want/need, and don't ram random
stuff down their throat.
... at least every Linux distribution gets that done.
