Sure. But the terminal emulator is converting between the
UTF-8-encoded octet stream and whatever encoding the font uses; the
font knows nothing about UTF-8. It just knows Unicode codepoints
(16-bit, 24-bit, whatever, depending on the font). Encoding those
codepoints into an octet stream is completely outside the font's
bailiwick.
