This kind of #ifdef in our application code seems highly bogus to
me.

Though the new syntax is better, I think it is mandatory that we
support the old syntax.  I would strongly prefer, therefore, to see
an extension to the old syntax to make it possible to do what the new
syntax makes it possible to do, without breaking backwards compatibility.
