Interesting, haven't come across that one before. I thought people
usually just base64 encoded binary info when encoding, but that means
either a data type argument to be passed as well, or a priori
knowledge of encoding types.
The reference implementation from http://bsonspec.org/ and
https://github.com/mongodb/mongo-c-driver/tree/master/src/ has
apache-2.0 licensing, though.
