Actually the tools to extract the messages. As for the binding part
(using gettext from within a Lua program) I have a binding. If the
gettext tools come with support to extract messages from Lua programs, I
can add this binding.

That might well be the case, but it is in widespread use and tools do
exist. What other system for i18n do you prefer/recommend?
