Speaking about being alone - looks like mandoc is quite widespread in
BSD ecosystem now: http://mdocml.bsd.lv/ports.html

Also - question for original poster: does the problem exists with latest
mandoc (compiling and running from src dir is quite simple)? There is at 
least one case when newer version matters: http://gnats.netbsd.org/49874
