EVERYONE should be compiling their own kernel.  The generic kernel is
far from optimal for anyone, it is only meant to be used as an
installation tool.  How many people have a dozen different brands of
SCSI controller and two different brands of ethernet adaptors in their
machines? Nobody. Everyone should be building their own kernel with
only the features they need. You'll get better performance that way
(kernel will be smaller, so more memory free, so less swapping/paging).

The people who designed the BSD config scheme went to a lot of trouble
to make it easy for everyone to build their own kernel. Take advantage
of it!
