some more info on my console problem:

screen width  is 96 characters
screen height is 75 lines, according to the startup messages


This line:

ados/    bin/     dev/     home/    mnt/

Turns into this:

ddss    bbnn      ee//    hhmm//    nn//


And this:
.cshrc          bin             home            proj            stand   var

becomes:
cchhcc          ii              ooee            rrjj            ttnn    aa

It looks like every second character is copied to the left.
This behaviour also occurs in vi, not just on the normal console. When you press
CTRL-L in vi, however, the screen is ok again.

I hope this is a software and not a hardware problem ....
