Has anyone given any thought to updating the default 8x8 (kf_8x8.c) 
font?  One good reason to switch is that the lower case L "l" and the 
pipe character "|" are identical.  Before I updated my kernel, this 
caused me quite a few problems.

I would suggest changing the default font to something like the 
ubiquitous pearl.font/8.  IMHO, Pearl 8 looks a lot better than the 
current System font, and the "l" and "|" characters are distingishable.  
Pearl.font has been around forever (I used ff to replace topaz.font 
with it on KS 1.3...), and it has been included with my different 
programs, so the copyright issue shouldn't be a problem.
