re: running new kernel to solve problems:

there was a *very* serious bug in mmap() that pk found and
fixed, which might cause exactly this, if you're trying to
use shlibs on a 'too old' kernel.  ('too old' has a fuzzy
definition, because i can never rememeber when these changes
went in; look in the CHANGES file...  8-)
