This is sure a lot easier than the way I have been doing it.

My way involved a series of commands like this:
  (while (contents of file=something) ; sleep 5 ; wend ; slattach ) &
  kermit

and kermit dialing the phone and then changing the file to 'something else' 
and sleeping while the
slattach ran.

Yes, I definitely like yours better...
