well, me being the genius that i am, when lamp had been up for over a week
and a half, i rebooted it, and installed a new disk as its root disk...

needless to say, the disk doesn't appear to be the happiest one in the
world, coming up with "non-media hardware failures"...

anyway, over the next few days, as time permits, i'm going to see what
can be done about this...
