Good news, then. Any chance of getting the X libraries to shadow
the C libraries for version numbering? Just a suggestion, and I know
the thinking behind 2.0 and 2.1, but unfortunately the X libraries
depend on more than just straight X. (Can anyone say ctype?)

Yep.  But it's not just finding /usr/mdec from the disklabel(8) man
page.  It's finding /sys/arch/i386/boot in the first place, and doing
a "make -n install" to see what it does.  There's the vax manual page
for installboot, with no corresponding man page (fairly obvious why
not) for i386, etc.  Perhaps someone could do a installboot procedure
manual page for posterity.  *Counter shrug*.

I think regular is the "operative" term here. At the moment, it's the only
drive I have connected up. I'm talking upwards of 8 reboots a day when I'm
rebuilding the system, which has become unacceptable for me.

I've got 16M of memory and 48M of swap. When the system is idle, it's fine.
And taking -pipe out seemed to help, too.
