Ok; the problems I was having were due to my having a "/dev/vga" and a
"/dev/ttyv0" both.

Charles was kind enough to point out to me that this is dangerous given that
they both have the same major/minor. 

So; hence the solution was to blow one away and make it a symbolic link 
to the other.
