(i say this as someone who's done a fair bit of work with tape jukeboxes...)
re: putting the host name in the label:
the 'what if it's in an autochanger' argument doesn't apply here --
the question was about adding a HOSTNAME to the superblock, in addition
to the FS name that's already there. the 'last mounted on' name is
fine, to look things up in an AC. you'd only need a hostname if somebody
walked into your machine room which contained two machines w/AC's,
and shuffled the disks between them. in that case, you'll need to
do it by hand anyway (and you might want to strangle that somebody, by hand,
too... 8-).
The fact is, if a disk is moving between machines, somebody's going to be
around to look at the label.
As for people who don't bother putting stuff on the (paper) label:
"screw them." If it's not important enough to label, it's not
important enough to keep. 99% of my floppies are unlabeled, scattered
about the floor, desk, etc. the 1% that are labeled, however, are labeled
neatly, and kept neatly in a drawer, etc... 8-)
