Could someone remind about why we can't use Adaptec 1522 controllers?

Long ago, in the dark ages, there was no driver for the 1520 and 1522.
However, the `aic6360' driver is supposed to work with the 6260 chip
that is on those boards.  When I asked around, nobody claimed to have
tested it, though.

So, the short answer is that it's supposed to work, and it's a bug if
it doesn't, but we're not actually sure until someone pipes up and tells
us.
