I reproduced the problem last night, in some cases :)  The case that
seems to be bad is starting an xinit session _from within an xterm_.
Starting a session on a separate vt that starts out in text mode seems
to work just fine to have two X servers--except that xinit always wants
to connect to :0 before starting the client program.
