I has this problem once, when I started X on the wrong virtual console
(Eg on ttyv3 I started xinit -- /usr/X386/bin/XF86_S3 vt01)
           ^                                             ^
           +------------ mismatch -----------------------+

I normally don't use pcvt. I just run it sometimes to test that it
still works with the XFree86 version under developpement.
