I dunno. Maybe I'm talking to the right thing on the other end, or
maybe the serial driver, for all its flaws, is fast. The numbers
speak for themselves, though:
toccata% ping ts1-ms.tlg.net

I'm using a USR Courier HST Dual Standard with ASL, and the modem on
the other end is an Intel 14.4k modem (dunno the details). I'm using
no compression or error detection at all. To be honest, I thought
that 170 ms was pretty lame (in an absolute sense - there's not much
you can do about transmission time when each byte takes 700ns to
send). I'm surprised to hear that others are getting lower speed - I
thought my connection was somewhat less than optimal.
