Is there any way to tell if a SLIP interface has been hung up on?  We seem
to sometimes not notice dropped carriers.  Unfortunately, some of the
brain-dead SLIP software out there *ignores ping* - so we can't tell if
the machines are up by pinging them.  The lines are idle.  Anything else
clever?
