I don't think that's what he's talking about.  Under BSDI you can have up
to eight virtual consoles - by hitting ALT-F1 I get the first console and
so forth till ALT-F8.

On my NetBSD box I have my virtual consoles setup using the ALT-CTRL-Fx
keys.

I haven't a clue if this is better than screen (less memory? faster?).
