I built X11R6 using NFS over 14.4K SLIP (30 hours for the successful
run) back on 0.9 or 1.0_BETA (I was short of disk at the time.)  Did
you cut down the read and write sizes to 1k?

cmd line:  mount -t nfs -o -r=1024,-w=1024 remote:/foo /foo

or

fstab:     remote:/foo /foo nfs rw,-r=1024,-w=1024
