It just occurred to me, while reading a note about this, that it is
_not possible_ to make symlinks "unowned" and still preserve sticky
directory semantics, because sticky directory semantics are based on
knowing who created something.  And if symlinks don't keep that
information....

Whiteouts would have the same problem, if they could be created and
destroyed as easily as symlinks (and if sticky directory semantics were
to apply to them), since they really _don't_ have owners.
