Check if /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/fonts.alias (1) still exists
(2) has the following line in it:
fixed -misc-fixed-medium-r-semicondensed--13-120-75-75-c-60-iso8859-1

(it's normally the first line after the version string comment.)

Double check the modes on the file (though if you're starting X as
root on local disk that's probably not an issue, though for NFS it
likely would be.)
