Sounds like you want to run something like "screen" -- fire up screen,
fire up your monster app inside it, ^\d to disconnect, come back later
with screen -r and pick it up (so you don't even have to come in from
the same address...) if account security isn't enough, screen has a
password/lock mechanism of it's own as well...
