Ahhh but the tricky bit will be determining what is supposed to be in
the ddx layer and what should not be, no?  I mean that if you specify
the ddx to be too low level then cards which accelerate some things
may not run full speed.  If the ddx layer is too high level then a lot
of code may be forced into the kernel.  I do not think that the cut is
that clear....
