I found this same problem.
I had to ftp the src tar.gz balls and extract them. Then do a sup and
it worked then (I still got all the updates, but the sup finished). I
suspect it is due to gzip not being able to run on the files that have
the hozed permissions, so it would alway balm out on me with an error
saying so in the same place. It was quite frustrating, as you might
imagine, to have a 1.5hr sup always die on me. I grabbed
shared.tar.gz and later, untared them and then my next sup completed
(in about two hours). My following sup completed after 15 seconds.
This is due to the 1.2 -> current cutover that just recently
happened and some unintended permissions problems (so it seems,
anyway).
