Isn't a Grand Prix a 7200 RPM drive? If so, those results still
seem a bit slow. If it's a 5400, the results are reasonable.

I've just rebuilt an Alpha kernel wth the new driver (pl24), and
I notice no significant difference. The IBM drive is a 5400 RPM
DPES-31080, the Tos drive is the internal one on my Multia (Toshiba
MK2526FB).
