Yes.  In the current implementation, unionfs demands that the upper
layer support whiteouts, or else that the mount be read-only.

IMO this is a problem with it, but as they say, "put up or shut up",
and I haven't yet found the time to redo unionfs so it keeps metadata
in files, a la Sun's tfs.  I did a user-land version of it, but ran
into the locking problems NFS had at the time....
