i thought it just meant that the size of the filesystem (in sectors)
was not a "convenient" size to map out in block maps and inodes and
stuff.

ie, the size of the partition mandates this many inodes this many
block groups and so on and so on, which translates back to slightly
less than the actual number of sectors in the partition.

or am i just making this up as i go along (again)?  :)
