  $MAIL should take care of it.

  I agree that the change it good, but I'd like to see us move to
something like the Cyrus IMAP, but possibly scaled down a bit.
  . no direct access to email by files. Always by a protocol,
	defaulting to talking to a unix domain socket /var/run/imapd
	[if email is remote, then a local proxy runs]

  . no support for pipes in .forward files. Instead, provide a
	program similar to "atrun" that provides equivalent
	functionality. 

  . mail files not owned by user

  This is very qmail-like. I'm not a big fan of some of Qmail's
behaviour, but there are some very nice qualities that I like.

  If someone is *very* concerned about /var/mail functionality, then
perhaps a virtual file system will show up to handle that.
