I've committed a tuned version of the LANCE front-end for Digital
`ioasic' machines (Turbochannel Alphas and DECstations).  It works
fine on a 5000/240, and Matt Jacob has tested it on a Sandpiper (3000/700?).

I've been running this code for three or four months with no problems
(apart from instrumentation glitches) so I don't expect any problems.
