i've had the same problem specifying the wrong pointer protocol in
XF86Config. the pms driver converts the ps/2 mouse protocol to
busmouse protocol, see pms(4).
I'm using the following on my toshiba tecra, where /dev/mouse is
linked to /dev/pms0.   

Section "Pointer"
   Protocol        "BusMouse"
   Device          "/dev/mouse"
   BaudRate        1200
   Emulate3Timeout 50
   SampleRate      0
   Emulate3Buttons
