a) Well, maybe we should find out.
b) the moderator can subscribe the person to the netbsd-nomail list, it
isn't that hard, and as you point out, it is easily automated,
particularly at the moderator's side of things.
c) A reasonable one-time price to pay to close the lists to spam. I'm
willing to do a lot of work here. Ideally we could round-robin the
moderator duty.

Maybe the netbsd-help list is one that we won't put under auto-moderation.

Half the Linux lists that *I* read are closed.

I think such a think could be devised --- it is a good idea, and would help
everyone.
