I think I found the source of the authentication problem I was having.

This resulted from further confusion from the Sysinst program. When Sysinst
finished extracting all of the install binaries, base, comp, etc, kern, text,
gnu, and so on, it went on to extract all of the X-stuff. I was not expecting
this since the INSTALL notes said the X-stuff would not get extracted. I
thought that it has simply extracted all *.tgz files in that directory -
including secr.tgz.

WRONG! I checked the dates of files like libcrypt.a - May 22nd. I looked into
the secr.tgz file - May 24th. Thank God for timestamps!

This, however, brings up a new question.

Q: How do you migrate a passwd file from 1.2.X to 1.3.2?

After Sysinst finished, and my system re-booted, I found that Sysinst had NOT
migrated my old passwd files. Here's what I did. I cp'd master.passwd from
/etc.old to /etc, and re-booted the system. This seemed to re-build all the
passwd databases, passwd, pwd.db, and spwd.db. I tried to login and - IT
WORKED! Now if I had the exportable version of the security stuff, Why did all
of my old passwords work???

Any clues?
