I think we've already come to the conclusion here that on the vast
majority of machines this is not possible due to hardware limitations,
and that this problem is going to get worse with new hardware, not
better, since folks seem to be moving to the PCI bus which not only
cannot give us obvious matching of devices to names, but may rename
a device if a second, similar device is plugged into another slot.

Can we drop this now?
