Thank you, Stephen and Matthias, for your help.  Your answer was right on the 
money!  I put

	pms* at pckbc?

in my kernel instead of psm.  I put 

	Protocol	"Busmouse"
	Device		"/dev/pms0"

in my XF86Config file.  Now I have a working touch pad!  Hooray!
