I remember seeing a while back that there was some magic to getting the
X server to work on systems with wscons (as opposed to pcvt).  I read
the XFree86 README.NetBSD and I made sure that I included the necessary
option in my config file, but when I start the server it just tells me
that it couldn't find any useable console devices.

What did I miss?  :)
