I *might*, possibly, want to see the output generated by an
install that proceeded normally. But why should I have to see
it interactively, real-time? (I don't know how many times
I've wandered off after starting an install and been annoyed
to come back --- sometimes the next day --- to the damned 'do
you wan to see the names of files as they're untarred?' prompt.

Why not have sysinst log its output (and for that matter the
user's input) to a file in memory, and copy that file into the
new /var/log/messages when finished? You'd have access to the
information if you really cared, without having to babysit the
installation. The trade-off would be that you wouldn't have a
convenient way to bail from an install that was proceeding
sucessfully but where you'd decided you didn't like in some
way --- which seems like an entirely fair trade to me.
