No, this also seems to work in console mode.  It just won't read
the mouse or random keystrokes (in particular, non-character-generating
keys, such as shift, control and Alt (and the diamond keys which I
remap to Alt :-)), among others).  You have to hit a printing key,
such as return or space or tab, to wake up the screen.
