VIM is great editor, my most favourite. Unlimited undo, syntax
highlighting, build-in scripting (including Python bindings, if
compiled in), X & mouse support to note the features I like most.
However, I don't think I'd support replacing nvi with it in our
distribution.

As Antti noted, Vim is BIG. I don't know how slow it is, I don't have
any real performance problems with it. Anyway, I'd like to keep a
vi clone which is relatively minimalistic and would not have
too many dependencies to actually work.  nvi is also
much better in memory usage. VIM uses approximately same
amount of memory as the edited file's size, nvi much less.
The difference shows up when you need to edit say 50MB logfile.

Just my opinion.
