The tape drive is on the same system - on a different scsi controller
though.  There is a holding disk but it is small so this particular
backup will be wanting to go straight to tape. FWIW I'm using
Amanda version 2.4.1p1

Ouch that's what I want to avoid :-) 

When I get back I'll build dump with -g and I can then attach to it
with gdb next time it does this.  That will be in a few days.
