be serious, perry.  *lots* of programs assume that the way they're
configured is correct.  for what it's worth, here's a *really* easy
way to hang a machine *hard*:

   # echo pass in quick on lo0 to lo0 from any to any > /etc/ipf.conf
   # ipf -E -Fa -f /etc/ipf.conf
   # ping 127.0.0.1

you might get one reply...then deafening silence.  except for someone
pounding on the keybaord to no avail.  i think that a 37th level
kernel wizard with a pre-attached serial console and ddb might be able
to unwedge it, but that's it.
