From what I understand this happens sometimes in OpenBSD too.
I think it might be timing related.  For some cards it's extremely intricate
to access the ac97.  It has to be done at exactly the right moment
(just check the eap driver!).  I have to documentation for the
Neomagic so I can't tell if it has such problems.
