   Doing a manual "mediaopt adhoc" it suddenly starts working. I don't
   know why that is needed for an0, while not for wi0, but you're still
   my hero ;-)

Lucent's ad hoc demo mode (invoked by default by wi(4)) is not the
same as IBSS mode.  You need to get both cards using the same
signalling protocol.
