Hmm.  I have noticed that my IDE disk based systems sometimes get slow, but
this only happens when doing a massive "rm -r" or "tar" operation and then
trying to execute commands from the same disk.  I'm not sure why SCSI would
make a big difference here (if the disk is seeking wildly), though.  The
best thing would be to have a separate disk for the OS and another for the
data (and one for swap ;)

I don't know why vi would get slow - unless the disk is seeking and vi is
trying to save a 10 MB backup file or something.

My not-so-old Seagate Barracuda (9.1 GB SCSI) feels dead slow now that I
have 30 and 45 GB IDE disks...
