I bought a pair of Philips DSS350 USB 'Digital Multimedia
Speakers', as they have both a USB and standard audio input.
They require a custom Windows driver (and the manual warns you
never to connect them to any machine before loading that driver),
and only produce garbled noise and much syslog unhappyness under
NetBSD.
dmesg for affected interval relayed below. This is probably
more of a warning to others in case they do not want to
go through the same level of fun.

I think I can safely describe them as a losing item of
technology - the docs state that under Windows and USB the
speaker volume control only works after the startup sound
has finished, and pressing them before can do bad things
to your machine. The startup noise plays at whatever volume
they were when the machine shutdown.
If you are unfortunate enough to try using the normal audio
connector the on speaker volume does not work at all and
you have to use the 'soundcard volume control'. This is of
course after waking everying in a 1000m radius with the
massive volume of the startup noise.
Oh, the document all this crap in an addendum that points
you to a website that does not exist.
